West Wyalong and the Bland Shire Council

The primary township of West Wyalong is located at the junction of the Newell and Mid Western Highways and is a popular resting point for many a traveller. The shire has a strong reputation for genuine country hospitality and friendly generous people. The area is the home of the Wiradjuri people and was first discovered by the explorer, John Oxley in the 1800’s. In the first instance, sheep and cattle were grazed and the area was also found most suitable for wheat and cereal crop production.
The area is rich in gold deposits and gold has been mined since 1893. Wyalong was the original township which benefited from design and planning. However, the discovery of an established water supply in West Wyalong, saw the population relocate to this area. As a consequence, the town of West Wyalong developed rapidly with the main street having a distinctive crooked characteristic. This feature reflected the well worn track which evolved between the gold diggings and trees.
The area is prospering from the re-establishment of gold mining at Lake Cowal under Barrick Gold. Much of the current employment is linked to the mining industry and forms the basis of development in the area. The Bland Shire has a strong future and offers a truly friendly and safe environment for families. The Bland Shire Council has invested significantly in the development of the parks and gardens, the complete refurbishment of the local swimming pool and innovative developments are well underway for the shire
